The reaction A1 A2 → B1 B2 proceeds according to a branched chain mechanism. The nucleation of the chain occurs as a result of the interaction of a light quantum with one of the reacting components or through thermal action. Assuming that the chain propagation reaction proceeds through two elementary steps, and the chain death occurs on one of the free radicals involved in the process, write down:
1) a diagram of the proposed chain reaction mechanism;
2) the stoichiometric equation of the chain reaction using the value of the chain length ν;
3) the kinetic equation for the reaction under study based on the proposed mechanism. Show that, depending on the nature of the free radical on which chain death occurs, the reaction is described by different kinetic equations;
4) how many A1 molecules are consumed and how many B1 molecules are formed in the chain if the chain length is ν.
Reaction Substance with which a quantum of light interacts or thermal decay occurs Chain length
ν Free radical on which chain death occurs Molecule that decomposes Molecule that forms T, K
Cl2 HCOOH → 2HCl CO2 Cl2 30 Cl- HCOOH HCl 298
